NASA Is Paying Me $18,000 to Lie in Bed for Three Months

Beyond the pain, I learned that it was nearly impossible to perform everyday tasks while slanted at the negative six degree angle. Taking showers consists of dousing myself with a hand-held shower head, and it’s especially hard to clean my back, legs, and feet. Reading books is exhausting, since I have to hold my arms outstretched in lieu of lifting my head up. Using my laptop is equally strange while lying down. Every time I brush my teeth, I feel like I’m going to choke on the toothpaste. Then I have to spit into a cup, but it inevitably dribbles down my cheek and through my beard every damn time.

How I Felt After 70 Days of Lying in Bed for Science

After spending 70 days tilted at a negative-six-degree angle, I had lost about 20 percent of my total blood volume. The standing test simulated the effects on astronauts’ cardiovascular systems during spacecraft reentry to Earth or Mars. But it was easy to forget all that because most of the NASA bed-rest study had been, despite my expectations, kind of boring.

Unul mai interesant (asemanator, dar nu chiar acelasi) a fost asta: Effects of 21 days of bed rest, with or without artificial gravity, on nutritional status of humans – e free si are niste tabele interesante cu evolutia unor markeri si indicatori de biochimie, hematologie s.a.
